Who Knew?

My neighbor has 2 of these yucca plants in her yard.  One day a few months ago, she noticed that one of them was changing.  It was starting to grow a stalk in the middle of itself (a stalk like 'Jack in the Beanstalk').

As the stalk grew higher the plant began to die at the bottom.  Ginny found it on Google and it said the plant is a "century plant".  It takes all it's energy to grow the stalk and kills itself in the process.

One of the new plants at the bottom of the main plant will take it's place.  We are amazed to watch the process as it happens.
When the stalk stopped growing in height, it started to make some blooms at the top.  Here's what it looks like now.
Here's what the bottom of the plant looks like now.
Who knew?  We sure didn't!

Amanda is a Park Ranger

Amanda is my granddaughter that lives in San Diego.  She has a new job as a Park Ranger.  Isn't that exciting?  I am so happy for her.

She is stationed at Palomar Mountain State Park.

Here's a little note she sent to us.

I know you're all sick of my Facebook pages, but this one is REALLY important!!

Hi!
I'm launching the education program here at Palomar Mountain State Park and I need to spread the word and get youth groups up here. Let me know if you have a youth group (preschool group, church group, moms group, summer camp, etc.) that would like to come for an education based field trip.  It would be no cost to you and I might even be able to arrange a no cost transportation up here! Spread the word and let me know if you're interested! And "LIKE" my new page too, please and thank you!

Here's Palomar Mountain State Park on Facebook.

Caladium Country

In my little corner of the world, caladiums are very popular and can usually be seen in every yard that has a little bit of shade.  They are quite beautiful so I thought I would share some pictures of them with you.

The first 2 pictures are from Tyner's yard.  The 3rd one is Ginny's and the last photo was from a open site in the RV park.

Every July (the last week-end), a festival is held in Lake Placid, Florida, home to a majority of the world's caladium fields. A popular activity is a tour of the fields of caladiums, the product of local growers.

Every July since 2003, Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Kissimmee, Florida, has presented the Florida Caladium Showcase, the largest indoor and outdoor display of the plants, including new varieties.

Beautiful, aren't they?

Happy Dad's Day

Happy Dad's Day to my dear dad.  Officially, his name was Michael but he was more confortable with the nickname of  Mike.    In his early adulthood, he worked for the Erie Railroad but lost his job during the Depression.  Nevertheless, he loved the Railroad & wore the railroad cap for most of his life.  He retired from  Fisher Body, a Division of General Motors in the 70's.  We lost him to a cerebral aneurism in 1982.  I love you Dad.  I miss you Dad.
My Dad with my son, Andy, snuggled up to him in the early 60's.  Wonderful memories!!

Dahli . . .

Dahli gave me a terrible scare yesterday.  Everyday, the first thing in the morning I take her out to do her  business.  Yesterday morning, for some reason, Dahli decided to change our routine.  She refused to go out at 6 a.m.  Strange but no big deal, right?  I tried again around 7 & again she refuses. Wait a minute.  Maybe there is something wrong!  All sorts of terrible stuff went thru my mind.

The third time was charm and finally she was able to take care of business.  This morning we were back to our regular routine.  I love happy endings, don't you?

Dick Plemmons, one of my friends here in the Village called yesterday and asked if I would come over and take a picture of the fish he caught.  I ran over and was amazed to see the size of the fish he caught right off the dock.  He said it weighs 4 pounds & it's a tilapia.  Who knew?

Saturday

Happy Saturday!! We had sunshine yesterday for the first time in weeks.   If you listened closely, you probably heard someone cheering.  Well, that was me. :)  It's been so depressing with cloudy skies and rain all day for 2 weeks that I couldn't help celebrating!!

The good thing is Andrea woke me up about getting my hurricane stuff organized.  I went shopping yesterday and need to finish up shopping today.  I'm pretty much all set with food & water. Mostly I need  things in case of damage to the roof or house, ie. plastic sheeting, caulk and duct tape.  That should get done today.

I heard this suggestion on TV this morning which I plan to do today also.  That's taking pictures of everything in the house so in case of a loss, you can prove what you have to the insurance company.  If you think about it, it's probably a good thing to do wherever you live.  It's not enough to just take the pictures though.  You have to store them in a safe place.  The devil is in the details, you know?

Happy w/e, friends!

Andrea

Tropical Storm Andrea has arrived. No high winds but lots of tornado warnings.  Lots of rain too and all of the TV programs interrupted by weather reports.  I'll be watching lots of TV today.  Pray we all stay safe.

Monday . . .

Happy Monday!  Hope you had a wonderful w/e.  I returned home around 11 a.m. following a delightful w/e at the farm.  Debbie drove Matt to the Airport for his 11 o'clock  flight out of here.  He should be back in Cleveland by 1 o'clock this afternoon.    Andy sent us off after a breakfast of scrambled eggs and cantaloupe.  Yummy!!

Have I ever mentioned all the trouble I have with trying to type on this laptop?  I have so much trouble with the cursor jumping around on the page and unless I'm really careful, the words I'm typing are going in very strange places on the page.  Any tips for solving my problem?  Hope so!

Sunday . . .

Yesterday we were treated to one of Matthew's dee-licious fish fries.  Along with the fish we had fried potatoes & cole slaw.  I loved it! Thanks Matt.

Today, after Mass, we visited Dad.  Matt hadn't been there since the headstone was erected so it was the first time he saw it.  I took a picture to share.
